Summer is here, let the fun in the sun begin! But don’t forget your skin. Keeping your skin protected from the sun’s UV rays is essential for your health for a number of reasons, including:
Cosmetically we know the importance of preventing sun damage and premature aging. There are two types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin which can cause premature aging. In essence, the epidermal ( the outer layer of our skin) has cells within it that contain melanin. Melanin protects the skin from Ultraviolet rays which can burn the skin and can over time reduce elasticity in the skin. As a result, your skin will prematurely age. Thus, the American Association of Dermatology recommends sunscreen that has SPF 30 or higher.
The skin is the largest organ in our body. What we put on it quickly gets absorbed through our bloodstream. Harmful chemicals on our skin can lead to serious health issues.
Using non-toxic products help keep our environment clean and safe. Yep, that’s right. When we use toxic beauty products, the chemicals come into our water which drains into our oceans and lakes and can lead to destroying wildlife.
Lastly, if you are spending time in the water or sweating in the sun be sure to reapply even with water-resistant screens. Water-resistant screens only last forty to eighty minutes.
It’s easy to understand why we've switched to using non-toxic products. The sunscreens in the Wellness Flow recommendations are mineral-only. Mineral sunscreens are made without the hormone-disrupting chemicals that cause many problems. Here are a few of our favorite summer items:
